Post by JLGORMAN » Wed Nov 02, 2016 1:00 am

On Nov 1st 54 HS Bands from throughout AR met in the Little Rock Area for the 1st ever Official State Marching Championship conducted for AR HS Bands. This contest ran under the authority of the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association and Chartered by Arkansas HS Activities Assn drew Bands from across the State. Class AA & AAA HS Bands performed at North Little Rock High Schools Stadium. Class AAAA & AAAAA Bands performed in the 54,000 seat War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
Winners in Each Class included
Prescott in class AA

Arkadelphia in class AAA

Paragould in Class AAAA

Bentonville Senior in Class AAAAA

Highest Scoring Band was Bentonville with a score of 468.40 out of 500 points. They were followed in Order by Paragould with a score of 446.40 points with Third Highest Score going to Lake Hamilton at 432.60 points.

The contest received excellent reviews and it is hoped that a couple of the Bands that could not make this years contest due to scheduling will be participants in next years contests.

In regard to Class A Bands, this year only 5 Class A Schools took part in AR Region Marching Assessments. Of those only two would have ratings high enough to qualify them for the State Marching Contest. In AR like in TX, schools in Class A have between 0 to 99 students enrolled in school. My guess is that when you get enough schools involved that are of that enrollment, you might have that Class. In TX we have almost 8 times the population as AR, yet we have less than 100 schools that are considered class 1A. Unfortunately small schools like this are not a growing number. I would imagine that in the next couple of years, there will be class A Bands at the AR state marching Contest.
