Here are the rankings with the addition of Week 6. I am currently researching the numbers and will add in band sizes within the next few days. Again, these rankings are only for educational purposes and to provide a projection of what may be the end of the year result.

I do want to note, however, that I personally wish Benicia and Golden Valley would go head to head one last time as they only met once this whole season, but alas, that will not be happening.

I would also like to note that this is not a reflection on the quality of some of the field show type bands as there are some real powerhouses in this ranking that have absolutely dominated the field show caption, but do not do parade primarily. If I was around more often for field show, I would love to do rankings and critiques for them, but for now, I can only appreciate how talented these groups are from the videos I've seen so far. And that is only a tiny glimpse of the power and beauty of what they can display on the field.

Congrats to all bands and I wish them continued success throughout the final weeks of the season!

To answer that question, it falls on three reasons.

First reason is that these rankings are based on scores without penalization. Penalties are procedural errors that are not reflective of the quality that a band produces. That does not take away from Golden Valley's consistent victories over the season as they do produce great quality in a variety of areas. But for the sake of pure raw score, Golden Valley has been defeated at least twice now, once by Irvington "A" in Week 1 and once by Benicia in Week 3.

Second reason is the weighting of the scores based on several competitions. Both Golden Valley's scores and Benicia's scores fall on competitions that have been weighted compared to last year's end-of-the-year scores. While Golden Valley's weighted Week 1 score (94.85) is not its highest score, Benicia's weighted Week 5 score (96.00) is. This also leads into the third reason.

Third reason is that Benicia has only competed twice so far, and based on that, Benicia's highest score (the weighted 96.00 from Week 5) was doubled and added to its Week 3 score, which averages out to 95.60 in the end. Golden Valley has competed four times, with the highest score being a 95.75 from Week 6. Factor that in with their score from Week 4 (95.65) and Week 1 (the weighted 94.85), and it averages out to 95.40 in the final total.

Now, here is the caveat. Benicia and Golden Valley, while they are not competing head to head due to GV hosting, will meet each other at the Central California Band Review this Saturday. In order for Benicia to remain in Rank 1, they must score no less than a 95.90 at the end of the day (without penalties). A score of 96 or higher would be safer. Will this be possible for them? Yes, its definitely possible granted the quality the band produces. However, if Golden Valley scores a 95.40 or above at the end of the day, regardless if Benicia's ending score is higher (unless Benicia scores over a 96), Golden Valley will return to Rank 1. Since Golden Valley has scored twice in the 95 range (95.65 in Week 4 and 95.75 in Week 6), the chance of Golden Valley attaining Rank 1 at this point is higher.

Bear in mind, this is only for the results of Week 8. Golden Valley ends their run at CCBR this weekend. Benicia will still compete up to Week 9 at Fairfield's Tournament of Champions. While the score to attain Rank 1 will be calculated prior to the final competitions of the season, Benicia will have a chance to reclaim their first rank standing if Golden Valley defeats them this Saturday, but of course, it will be a harder, uphill battle.
