Ayala people: What did you think??

Post by Wolfgang » Tue Nov 04, 2003 1:01 pm

for Ayala band members and/or boosters (or anyone else from the West Coast who saw them in San Antonio), I have a few questions.

What was your overall impression of the trip to San Antonio?
If you were able to see any of the other bands, which ones did you like best?
How would you compare the bands you saw to the California bands you compete with?
What, in your opinion, were the main differences between the bands at San Antonio and the bands in California?

I would be intrigued to read your thoughts.

As we were saying to the Texas people to prove we were from Cali..

" Totally Awesome Dude"

1. Ill start with the last question. The main differences were Texas Bands seem to be more military style with a few exceptions (Churchill had a very different show called Toxic). Drill does not have as much movement as we see here in WBA. Since Ayala was 1 of 5 bands from outside the state of Texas. The atmosphere was that of a Texas State Championship.

2. I didnt see all the finals but from what I hear the top 5 can compete anywhere. Most of us liked Reagan, Churchill, LD Bell and Westfield.

3. It was a great trip. When you enter in to the huge arena, hear the band announced and see all the people it can be overwhelming. The kids did great in spite of all that and we are very proud of them. 16 out of 57 is not bad at all.

A trip not soon to be forgotten...

Post by TheEgg » Wed Nov 05, 2003 6:04 pm

The trip to San Antonio?not soon to be forgotten. As you all know, or don?t, the Ayala Performance Ensemble went to the BOA regional for 4 fun filled days on a band trip. I would have to say this was the most inspirational and fun trip I have been to. It was a learning experience in many ways. Although I am in the colorguard and have competed nationally and in the UD Arena, the Alamodome and this weekend was incomparable to anything I have ever felt before.
On Friday we had a 5 hour practice and it was great because our ensemble worked well together and stayed focus at the high school with student milling around all over the place. They provided entertainment as well as encouragement. I now know what it feels like to be a gold fish inside a goldfish bowl. Then later that night we went to watch a few shows of Friday night prelims. All I can say was that it was an eye opening experience.
Of course out of the 3 bands we saw Steven F. Austin was one of them, they were AMAZING. Watching that performance put me into concentration mode to perform and stay focused. The next day we had a little rehearsal, which worked well for us, then off to the site to unload and warm up. Not knowing how it was going to work was a little weird and a lot different than in California. The warm up time is short so every had to be on top of their game. Then we lined up to get going into the dome.
What a feeling a rush of every emotion and seeing the look on our instructors faces was great too. Then we walk out there and the feeling from on the field looking up to in the stands looking down is soooo different and I think got everyone going. We performed then went back to await the results.
After having the woman explain to me how the judging and ratings work I was ready to see how we did. After scoring a Division 1 rating we were happy. Then after finding out we didn?t make finals I don?t think a single person was mad since we knew with the rating that put us in top 28. I will remember circling up and having the band all smiles and just fine looking. Nobody all sad or mad or anything just, chill. We were ready to see what beat us for finals. And we watched and I can safely say that every band that was in finals deserved to be there. I never thought once that ?we should be in finals over them?, not once.
Everyone amazed me and makes me want to work that much harder to accomplish things to the level that they have. After every show I wanted to stand up and clap because everything was amazing. Then the next morning Mr. Stone calls us out side at the butt crack of dawn to give us scores and stuff. To find out we were 16th made everyone soooo happy it was hard to contain the happiness from everyone. The good vibes were flowing because after we saw last nite at finals we thought would could have been much lower if everyone was as good as those people. To be sooo close to those bands felt so good since there were just breathtaking.
The general theme and morale for the trip was one of learning. I think our whole program learned a lot of things from this trip. These bands were soo amazing it makes us want to strive to be better and the determination they have was way rad too. Everyone had such hospitality and consideration for us it was great. I can truly say that I had an amazing weekend considering everything that went into these 4 days and everything that came out of them. We are all using this as a step forward in our march to WBA Championships where we hope to perform to our personal bests. Everything considered, Texas was a great experience for the Ayala BAC and a realization that there is much more out there left to be discovered, and that in order to perform at our peak level we have to put everything we have into our show and bring it to life just like the Texas bands did.

Texas was AWESOME. i learned so much from the texas bands and how they compete. i was amazed how good bands are, and as for us, i felt we all did a good job. we got 16th out of 57 of the best bands in texas. A lot of these bands compete on a national level. overall, i felt it was a good experience and i learned a lot about texas and their bands from my friend from MacArthur High School. wow. so many ppl from that school were watching us. when we were about to perform, some of us were nervous and some of us were excited. i was excited. on the astro turf i stumbled 6 times cuz i wasnt used to it. but i had fun and i think i can say that most people had fun.

Ayala to Texas

Post by BandPicc04 » Thu Nov 06, 2003 12:25 pm

First of all, i have to say that being able to compete with some of the top bands in the country was one of the most exciting competitions of my life. The hospitality of all the people in texas was awesome. A special thanks to MacArthur and Churchhill(sp?) high schools for allowing us to use their facilities. This was certainly not an experience that i will soon forget.

Everything that The Egg said was absolutly right on for me as well!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks alot you guys....................

i was once told that a high school can not ever be at the level of a corps. after watching L.D. bell jazz run at 190 while playing keepung perfect forms, listening to Stephen F. Austin have the tonal uality of a philharmonic, after Ronald Regans amazing drill and amzing music, and Westfields overall performance, 8 miked bassons playing a soli and there woodwinds doing a full blown choral portion that was better than some chiors that i have seen, need i go on? the quality of every single corps, oops i mean band, that i saw were amazing, and i beg to differ with what i was told. which brings me back to my original post...

Going to Texas promised to be an exciting challenge for all of us. We didn't know exactly what to expect. But I certainly wasn't even imagining what we saw. I was amazed with the top fourteen finalists. I especially enjoyed RR performance. It was... for lack of a better word, amazing. I would like to extend a thank you to all of the people we met while we were there. You were very hospitable and it was nice to meet you all. I was extremely impressed and I will not soon forget what I saw on Saturday. Thank you all again. :D

Memories that last a lifetime . . .

San Antonio was so fun. This was my first big marching band trip, and I enjoyed myself. Finals was awesome, and the top three schools deserved to their placings. My personal favorites were Winston Churchill, and The school with the blck uniforms and the blue drill team (I forgot the name). I hope we go back to a BOA event (out of state, hehe  ) in the future.

A "Positively Life-Changing Experience"

Post by airons0678 » Thu Nov 13, 2003 2:23 pm

All band directors: ARE YOU READING THESE POSTS? Don't take *my* word for it.

Ayala: After attending the BOA Regional Championships in San Antonio last year, I can honestly write that it was kind of a wish come true for me to see a California band experience this. (Ha ha! I wonder if my review of the BOA Regional Championships last year had any influence on Mr. Stone?) I am so glad you all had the time of your lives. It is my hope that years from now more and more bands will be daring enough to venture outwards. If you have not seen bands like Center Grove, Westfield, Marian Catholic, Plymouth Canton Educational Park, Lassiter, Tarpon Springs, Lawrence Central, L.D. Bell, Centerville, and Carmel...you really don't know what you're missing.
