This morning Feb 1st at 9AM CST, the UIL released the Realignment of Texas High Schools for the 2016 & 2017 School years. This event which was covered on ESPN is important in TX as it determines where all schools in TX will be placed and where they will compete. This strongly influences Marching Bands as next fall 6A & 4A schools will compete to go to State Marching Contest in Nov. Among the surprises listed was the moving up in enrollment for Leander Vandegrift, Leander and Cedar Park Vista Ridge, the 2015, 2,3 &4 Class 5A State Marching Finalists. Because of this change in enrollment they can now compete in the Higher 6A Class this fall.

This also means that Cedar Park , the only school in the Leander ISD not to move up will for the next two years be the top Rated Marching Band in Class 5A. Unless something happens they will be the top contender for the 2017 Class 5A SMC.

Among other things happening this spring is the UIL/TMEA increasing the number of Regions in the state from 28 to 33. This will mean more Marching Contests in the fall. The Class 6A Area Contests will be increased from 7 to 8 events. Class 5A will remain at 7 Area Contests and 1A-4A will continue with 5 Area Contests.

For those who do not care to travel, all the previously 6A schools in the Pan Handle, with the exception of Tuscosa in Amarillo will be in 5A. This means that Tuscosa will be bracketed with only one other school within 100 miles of Amarillo. They will have to travel on average 400 to 600 mile round trips to District 1 Contests this fall.

It seems that the UIL has found another way to keep football and marching Bands on the front burner even during Basketball Season.
