You would be correct. Incredible, isn't it? I would think moving to Logan wasn't a bad move, too, in that he was closer to all his BD pals.

Also, something else to keep in mind: I think there was one year Logan decided not to compete (travelled to a different part of the world) where they probably WOULD have won it had they competed. (2003, I believe?)

A tip of the hat also to Mission Viejo... almost every year, most felt it would come down to MV and James Logan... the perseverance alone...

2003 was the year Logan performed at Mid-West so they ended their season early to prepare.

Ah, that's right. Thank you for chiming in. I also feel like 1994 was a unique year...that maybe Clovis West intentionally performed in exhibition to give another band a chance to win? Or did Beyer win it fair and square? I will need to do some research.

I wasn't involved back then but what I heard was WSMBC made a rule that if you had won a certain amount of times you would have to perform in exhibition the following year. Obviously they didn't continue that practice and I can't say that Beyer didn't deserve it.

Beyer had a great band that year, but Clovis West was just incredible. I disagree with the "take pity" rule, 'cause I don't think I'd feel like a true "champion" if I won. But that is just me.

I think obviously parity in this case amounts to 3 bands essentially dominating the activity for 20 years

Learning that the Clovis West and Logan wins are all under the same director makes it more like 1 director dominating the activity for 2 decades.

Yes, and very well deserved--all of them. See any video of Clovis West from 1989-1996 and James Logan from 1997-onwards and you will see why. Too good. Mission, of course, had one of their best shows ever in 1998, so well deserved there; and Ayala has emerged as a dominant band in recent years--also well deserved. Besides BOA, WBA is the place to be for the best field bands in CA (all sizes). There are a few good ones not in WBA, of course, but the sheer concentration of the greats in one association cannot be ignored.

Imagine if Thousand Oaks had gone to WSMBC Championships in 1997.

They beat Logan at the Live Oak Regional at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium (witnessed it!), taking most captions except for colorguard.

I think if you go back a little further, you'd see Lincoln (San Jose, Ramiro Barrera's gig before Clovis West I think), Clovis HS, & Live Oak...

...I don't think I have my program from the 1991 WSMBC Championships anymore. There was a list in it.
