I see that the Concord drum major won the mace category. I believe that he has taken first place a few times this year, as has previous Concord drum majors in recent years.

Here's my question. The Concord drum major uses a wooden musket replica as his "baton". How does this qualify him to be considered a "Mace" drum major. This instrument is not a mace, nor is it a "military" style baton. I know that NCBA rules can be very liberal at times, and I have nothing against Concord or this kid, but, I've been wondering for quite some time how this apple is being compared to this orange?

To me......the appropriate category for this drum major would be the "Open" category. Any thoughts?

NCBA rules specifically state that "equipment" is allowable instead of a baton for drum majors...

"Separate categories that may be judged are Mace (long equipment/baton), Military (short equipment/baton), and Open (no equipment or baton)."

Personally, I saw Concord's DM be judged in ALL THREE categories the first few years after they introduced the musket/baton. Eventually it settled permanently into the mace category since it's of a similar length.
