Recaps are up at www.scsboa.org

As a college music student I did some judging of my own at the event last night. I did not do numbers but I did placements and notes. Here are my top 5.

5) Bellflower HS (2A): for a small band they delivered a large visual package. Guard was clean which really helped the visual score. Musically they are not bad. Solid sound but with some intonation and phasing issues. Music was simple and lacked difficulty. However they lacked the power that the larger bands produced that night. Marching and intervals were great. The circus theme was clear and they used to to their advantage visually.

4) West HS (6A): now I'm not one to think bigger is better, but the larger bands simply out performed the smaller ones that night. Biggest and loudest band of the night but they suffered from intonation and lack of phrasing. But when they hit chords they hit them hard. Music was more difficult than the smaller bands but nothing that wowd me. The theme was called in the 5th which didn't make sense to me. They had props all over the field but I didn't know what they had to do with their show. Guard danced a lot and they also had a string quartet but it was so hard to hear them from the stands. I doubt the judges heard them.

3) California HS (5A): Rhapsody in Blue was the theme. Overall a good balanced sounds when the band played in unison, but when the individual sections were featured there were a lot of intonation problems. Clarinet section had a lot of members but also a lot of problems #chickensqueaks. Visually they were sub par, just a lot of gimmicky dancing around and jumping/hopping, which I didn't really enjoy. Auxillary was ok.

2) Mayfair HS (5A) exhibition: I judged the host band because I wanted to. Loved Loved Loved the patriotic theme, who doesn't? Auxillary and band were in sync the entire night which helped a lot with visual effect. Large low brass sound and trumpets were nicely in tune. Wood winds section lacked a bit. Their show was put together nicely. Auxillary was so clean and the tosses were high. They need to work a little bit on projecting their sound and they'll be golden.

1) Arroyo HS (5A): this band won the Sweepstakes if I recall correctly. Their show was the most creative and music had the most difficulty. It was an arrangement of Swan Lake. Although the band wasn't the loudest they were the most balanced. Strong woodwind section which is rare for a big band. The theme of swan lake was easily portrayed to the audience and the guard were the swans with a battle between light and dark. Although their wasn't a percussion judge I believe they just edged out West HS percussion. Auxillary needs to work a bit on timing. Congratulations on the sweepstakes by the way.

There you have it, my recap. :D maybe if I go to the. BOA regionals I'll do another one.

What a great recap! I do hope you do one for BOA. I think I might be inspired enough to do one, too. (Who knows? Maybe I'll run into you. lol!)

It is a great idea for a college music major to do this. In the future I'd suggest getting a hold of a copy of one of the judging sheets being used, read it carefully ahead of time, and then try to actually put numbers to each group. The cool this with SCJA and SCSBOA posting full recaps now is that it is easy to find them and then compare how you placed a group versus the actual judge.

I did this some a few years ago as a director interested in learning more about the judging process and it was very eye-opening for me. Really helped me start to understand the sheets more and more and has really helped me improve the quality of my own group (as well as becoming a judge and the experience I've gained from that).
