The real sad thing, IMO, about it is that it means less students being involved in music nowadays.

I graduated from a LAUSD school in the 70s (yes, I was only five back then ) and my high school band had about 100 students, including the baton twirlers and sign carriers. They performed at high school half time shows (both home and away), some parades (my brother played cymbals when the school was the city rep in the Rose Bowl parade), and then in the spring, was a concert band. That's when they competed, not in the fall.

Now the band for my high school is in the 1A division.

Here is a look at the top 12 single scores from 1A with the rankings from teacherken in parenthesis. With Los Angeles having two of the highest scores I added one band. With show today, tomorrow and Saturday this could change daily.

I have to put Los Angeles in the favorite spot for the gold at Championships with anyone posting a score in the 70s having a shot at the silver and bronze.

With 38 bands on the grid, making it to champs is quite an accomplishment. Good luck to all the bands.

1. 74.1 Los Angeles (1)
2. 71.4 Gabrielino (5)
3. 70.8 Los Angeles (1)
4. 70.7 Tustin (18)
5. 69.8 Lancaster (3)
6. 69.6 Saddleback (8)
7. 68.4 JKF - Granada Hills (10)
8. 68.1 Marshall (7)
9. 67.9 Don Lugo (17)
10. 66.4 La Costa (11)
11. 66.2 Palos Verde (2)
12. 65.1 Oxnard (14)
13. 65.0 Santa Margarita (12)

Will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the next few days, and what happens next week. Not sure if I am correct, but I believe that many of the top ranked groups have yet to actually compete at the same show so it will be interesting to see what happens when they go head to head with the same set of judges.

I think we all want to believe that the results would be the same (placement) regards of who the judges are, but it is difficult to compare raw numbers from show to show as there are some many factors that could affect the numbers. Maybe it was really windy and the visual didn't work as well, maybe it was a stadium that is less friendly to the sound of a small group, maybe it was really hot, really cold...etc.

How good is Los Angeles that they're in both 1st AND 3rd?! Maybe its a ploy to make Gabrielino feel surrounded.

Another factor is the front ensemble and amplified sound. With small groups this can be a curse or a blessing. A well balanced sound is hard to achieve with a large front ensemble, especially when amplified.

Personally I have heard groups that have hurt their score with what they do musically with their reinforced sounds.

HA, Ha.

Los Angeles second best score is better than 36 bands best score.

Yep, and sound effects can be great or can really hurt depending on the stadium too. Sometimes you get that stadium that sounds very different on the track or the field than in the stands and then the balance gets all wonky on the amps...or the kids start trying to adjust to the sound on the field but the field sounds kind of dead so the balance is all out of whack in the stands....oh the things we put students through in marching band. But hey, if you can sound good under those kinds of conditions, then sounding great in a concert hall should be easy.

Taking a closer look at scores from last year to this...
Los Angeles, Charter Oak and Santa Margarita are all running behind where they were score wise last year. Maybe the rest of us can close the gap this year.

I noticed that almost all bands posted a score 5 points higher (or more) at champs than their previous score. The top three were all in the 80's last year.

This year I will be surprised if anyone makes it into the 80's (Los Angeles would not surprise me if they scored 80 or higher).

Does anyone know if SCSBOA still takes the top 4 and draws and then the next 4 and the last 4?

Last I knew that is still how it is done regarding grid placement versus performance time at Champs....and they do the 16 minute time intervals at Champs instead of 15. Not exactly sure why on that, guess it is just to make sure there are no possible hangups.

Can't say much about what will happen or could happen with scores as I haven't seen many of these groups (the ones you mentioned included). LA always does well so i wouldn't be surprised by anything from them. Charter Oak has a new director this year so no idea what will happen with them...director change almost always is tough the first year.

Saddleback should now be considered a serious contender for the top three.

I was wondering this myself. I looked at the SCSBOA site this morning, trying to find the info. Unless I'm missing something, this is the closest to an explanation as I can find: http://www.scsboa.org/documents/download/file/14/open

Under the 2014 Championships pop-down, it currently has info about championship merchandise only. And on the grid pop-down, it has a statement that the grid will be taken down temporarily for a time tomorrow.

So unless someone has the definitive answer right now, we'll see tomorrow evening when the line-ups are announced. I'm predicting that my school's band Facebook page will be pretty active tomorrow.

So now that we know the 12 bands that made champs, what are your predictions. I really don't trust some of the scores that were posted tonight to place them based on highest scores. I also had some disagreements with the judges placements/scores earlier today as well but I'm not a judge so I can't say much. So yeah, any prediction? Also, out of the bands you watch what do you like and/or dislike about their performances.

Los Angeles
Saddleback
Lancaster
Marshall
JFK
Palos Verses
Highland
Don Lugo
Oxnard
LA Costa Canyon
Charter Oak
Tustin

Given that the judging is subjective, it could be that some of the bands in each division that are not in the first two or three positions might actually deserve a higher ranking. Again, I'm an amateur about all this, but in looking at scores for 4A thru 6A for some competitions, it seems the numbers were low, compared to other competitions. Would the bands who got scores in the 70s from one comp get scores in the 80s with the same performance the same day if they had competed at another one?

I'm guessing the bands now seeded number one in their divisions would still be no matter which competitions they competed in, but I can see a variance in range for some bands and wondering if they should be lower or higher in their groupings.

After spending way too much time thinking about this and considering 4 of the finalists did not compete against any other of the top 12 bands since 10/25 and looking at who outscored who when they did compete against each other and taking into account late season comps mean more than early shows…

Here are my predictions

1. Los Angeles 80.2
2. Saddleback 79.2
3. Marshall 77.2
4. JFK 77.1
5. Oxnard 76.8
6. Don Lugo 75.4
7. Charter Oak 75.5
8. Highland 74.8
9. Lancaster 74.7
10. Palos Verde 73.9
11. Tustin 72.7
12. La Costa Canyon 71.1

These predictions are partially based on the judges not holding scores and keeping 1A bands in box 3. If they hold back scores everything will be up to 5 points lower.
