sad sight

Post by mr. music » Thu Sep 18, 2014 12:16 pm

Upon receiving the line-up for the Antioch Delta band review, it was a sad surprise seeing only 16 programs participating in the event. Only a few years ago, it seemed there were almost twice that amount. Poor funding? Lack of preparation? What are some of the reasons for the steady decline of participating groups in this, as well as other band reviews over the past few years......?

Over the past dozen years, the event has had anywhere from 14 to 19 participants. There MAY have been a time or two before that when it approached 30, but those times would have been an exception to the rule.

Straight from the WOP scores pages, the number of competing bands at the Delta Band Review...

1999 - 17
2003 - 14
2004 - 13
2005 - 13
2006 - 18
2007 - 19
2008 - 19
2009 - 15
2010 - 18
2011 - 17
2012 - 19
2013 - 16

Seems pretty consistent.

Lets face it, it is pretty early for a review. There are programs, particularly the ones that start school early (like mine...Aug 13) that would be ready at that point, but many won't.

I have judged the review almost non-stop for the past several years and it seems pretty consistent in size to me. I am actually impressed that the number of bands that do attend are ready, and have good quality so early. Sometimes the guard choreography is not finished, but other than that, the groups do a decent job for a Sept. review.

Don't forget to send me a copy of the line up so I can add it to our events calendar listing!

I went to the very first one and rarely missed this one for most of my time at Fairfield....and that was back in the day when school started the first Tuesday after Labor Day. Ahhh.....the good ole days...LOL

My money on the event is either Golden Valley or Armijo.

I remember Russ always taking us when I was in band. Its a great first review. I started August 13th with my kids this review forces them to get ready and not procrastinate. I'm nervous and super excited! Ive been waiting 18 years to do this march!!! The Irish Guard said no every year when I asked for it! Finally got another branch to send it to me. Leave it to a friend in London to help me out!
