Judges Comments Not Received:

In 4 of the last 5 festival/contests our groups have attended we have not received our judges recorded comments. I am beyond frustrated with this. I am really missing the old fashioned cassette tapes. They had their problems but Jesus, We have been in the so called digital age for the last 20 years and I've had nothing but problems with CD, SD cards and drop box.

I value the comments of the judges from the organizations that critique our groups. CMEA, NCBA, and Music in the Parks. But for God's Sake, I'd like to actually hear them!!!!!!

I would like to post recordings and videos of my groups so members of the WOP with expertise and experience can help me help my groups with their comments of our performances.

The problems in performance are obvious to me more often than not, what i really would like to hear are possible solutions to help fix the problems!

My students are all for this by the way.

This would be for Middle school Jazz Band, concert band, and parade style marching band.

Before I post any videos/recording, is this a good/bad idea?

Not surprised in the case of NCBA.

You are free to do so, but just know that comments and statements made should be taken with a grain of salt. While there are many members on this forum with vast amounts of experience and expertise, there are just as many people on this forum who are quite opposite.

With that said, I personally would love to see your students and what they have to provide in education and entertainment.

I assume you have contacted the associations mentioned and asked about the recorded comments. In So. California, SCSBOA uses digital recorders for field competition and for concert/festival evaluation. The digital recorders are immediately transferred to a laptop computer and flash drives are made available to the director (SCSBOA is also experimenting with Drop box). The important thing to note is that ALL comments are kept on the laptop computer for a couple of months so if anything does go wrong, duplicate copies can be made.

I really like SCPA's use of Competition Suite. A one time set up gets the comments and recaps to all who are set up for that ensemble. I wish SCSBOA would look into using it for the field and possibly the parade season. I do not know the cost or anything on the admin. side of using it. I just know it works great from my perspective.

The MCBA (Michigan Competitive Bands Association, the home circuit for bands like Plymouth-Canton, Walled Lake Central, Rockford, Jenison, and Reeths-Puffer) has used Competition Suite for a season or two with great success. I've heard nothing but good things about it from my midwestern contacts.

I was on staff for a Michigan group. I got notifications, comments, and recaps in the same manner as I do for WGI. It works well.

I don't know the cost...but we accomplish the same thing using Dropbox. It just takes a lot of manual time to set up.
