That doesn't surprise me.

What surprises me is they expect to take 45 min to drive to a school 17 minutes away
45 minutes for the drive seems right on the money to me, but I wouldn't have believed that to be true 12 years ago when I was teaching a 2A-sized group.

The only three real differences between 1A and 6A are the available musical and visual textures, the challenge of concert programming and rehearsal planning for the additional ensembles, and the amount of time it takes to get anywhere at all. There's a logistics multiplier involved.

Wow, after looking at the grid, there are quite a few really close scores going into championships. I cannot wait to see bands at Ramona HS. There are many interesting shows to be seen. Good luck to all bands competing tomorrow.

Congrats to all the bands that made the cut and those that wrapped up their seasons. The Poway district will send all five of its high schools to championships (Poway, Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Westview and Del Norte). I will be rooting on everyone, especially my alma mater, RB.

Hard to say, but I think the top three will include any one of the following groups: Mt. Carmel, Chino, Rancho Bernardo, Vista Murrieta, Poway

Longtime Lurker! First time poster. It's about time, I suppose

As a former MC marching Sundevil from the late 80s (my wife is from the Rancho Bernardo music program), I've used WOP with great pride following Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo. Fast forward 25 years - my niece is the Colorguard Captain while my son is a freshman trumpet player at Del Norte High School, the youngest high school in the Poway district. This year marks the first time as a band dad that I'll be travelling to SCSBOA championships and I'm happy to see all the Poway schools are competing in their respective divisions. My first son out of 4 will be competing in his first SCSBOA championships (13 more years of High School Marching band for me!)

As far as 6A, this year I've seen Vista Murrieta, MCHS, Poway, San Marcos, Etiwanda, El Dorado, Poway, Arcadia (I haven't seen Chino, Los Osos, Savanna, or Rowland). From the bands that I've seen, my top 3 would be MCHS, Rancho Bernardo, and Vista Murrieta. Out of those 3, MCHS had the best marching I've seen - Vista Murrieta has the most wow factor (next to maybe San Marcos, who was not on par in the marching department) - Rancho Bernardo has probably the best balance of woodwinds and brass, to go along with a very clean percussion. To me, it's really a toss up between those 3 (again, from the bands that I've seen). It all depends on what the 5 competition judges value more. I think it stinks to have to pick a champion this way. If I had a say, I'd double up the judges in every scoring category.

Now, for 4A, I only saw 2 other bands that would make Champs (Helix and El Camino) - From research and TheGrid, (and YouTube), I would say that Hart will be the favorite. I saw an early performance of them on YouTube (before it was pulled), and musically they seemed more mature then any of the other bands that I saw in the top 5 of the grid (from YouTube). I'm hoping that Del Norte can finish 9th or better this year, which would be a marked improvement two 11th place finishes when they competed in 2A and 3A and championships the previous 2 seasons. I'm excited to see the top 4A Bands!

Well, that's all I have - Good luck to all the bands that are competing in SCSBOA Champs.

Hart has a very pretty show this year, and definitely very different from the darkness of last year's show. I saw them early season at West Ranch and later at their own show and both were great. They are really good at what they do. What is even more interesting is that one of my students told me he noticed from the program at a show that Hart is only 2 people over the upper limit....so they are almost a 2A size, and competing in 4A. Wish I could say there is something special in the water in Newhall and I could bottle that and feed it my own students, but there isn't. The kids start early and the directors from elementary through high school all expect great things out those kids and have the pedagogy to back it up.
