Which marching band has the best screamer and what is his or her highest note. More intended for high school but i always like to be amazed at what the corps can do.

Riverside Community College Marching Tigers played at Valley View this weekend. One of their trumpets hit a note i didnt even knew existed. So i would have to say that whoever he/she is, they have the highest note on the field.

Vista Murrieta has a Freshman Trumpet Player with a "F" under a double "G"
He plays with no effort and with braces. Recently opened a concert for Les Brown and is a prospective trumpeter for the annual Grammy Awards. Keeps me on my toes. Pretty impresive for a freshman.

It's not marching band but it's still prospective. Blue Devils have some screamers...

2003 soloist... he plays a mad double C in it. Not a little pop but an actual hold wiht almost only him playing. Very very impressive.

We have a trumpet player at Valley View who plays a double G at a climax in the middle of our opener and again at the end of our opener before the ballad.

Not nearly enough screamers today....

I have been around marching bands for a loooooonnng time now, and have lamented the lack of screamers for many years. I remember when I joined a youth band back in 1969, we had several guys in the trumpet section that were playing in the "double G" range at that time. Over the next several years the band produced even more screamers. In 1977 we had 7 guys with double G's and three of them had double C's. In 1976 Westminster HS had five senior trumpet players and all 5 had double G+ range. What a sound they had! And when I was in Long Beach State's "Big Brown Music Machine" in the mid 1970's they had 50+ trumpets and at least one third of them could hit double G or higher. Sadly, somewhere in the 1980's the screamers all just disapeared. I am not sure why they faded away, but it made bands sound a little boring to me for a long time. Luckily they seem to be making a comeback. :D

YAY!!!!...i was waiting for a topic like this to show up....my range consists of a consistent strong double G/A, with the occasional Bb/C above that on my lucky days. its funny tho cuz i have this strong range and im not able to use it outside of jazz band and the marching standtunes during football games, cuz i did my whole screamfest at the rowland tournament, and the judges complained that i stood out from the whole musical sound....given that the songs that our repertoire is based on (Gloria by john rutter) can be labeled as classical, so my director is restricting me to "unleash the fury" as he calls it on the last note of our closer. but i had a double G at the end of the first opening statement at the beginning of the opener, another one towards the middle of the opener in the park and blow, one at the end of the opener, in the closer, i took the first two trumpet phrases up an octave, first one holding an E at the end of that phrase, second (which is the same as the first, except 2 1/2 steps higher) popping a double G at the end of that phrase, at the company front i took the 2nd tpt harmony up an octave, which has 4 double G half notes, and finally double F at the last note of the closer, if i dont have the stamina to take it up to the Bb, which was the case that nite. but the judges deemed what i was doin unapproriate for the musical setting, and because of the lack of lower strenght at the chord holds, i pierced through the band. so as of now im not allowed to do it. im hoping they will give me more freedom if we go to championships, cuz playing on the page is pretty boring. yep....classical and screaming DONT go together, unfortunately.....which is why im pushing for a latin show next year, or sumthin that has written screamer parts for me, or at least something that will support a high intense dynamic sound....yep yep....i started screaming last year with braces, my highlight was in the Hawaii invitational festival, hosted by WOP, where i blasted out double Gs in the 1st week's competition, while our jazz band performed (heh the 4th tpt screaming...almost an oxymoron). my braces where removed, and whereas im still recovering now, my range has come back stronger and im able to get past the old double A barrier i had (on my bach 3c mouthpiece which i still use, cuz i have nothing else and cant afford anythin else :-P :D :D :D    ) and my tone has also come along way now that my braces have came off....yep yep....livin the "high" life with a lotta jealousy from my brothers, but its in good fun.....

btw....screaming with braces is much easier to do than without (except that you reach a limit which is hard to get above it and took me a while (about more than a half a year) to get from G a step up to the A which WAS my limit with braces), but heh thats my lil secret so heh

HI Dave. I was among those guys. hahha. None of us on 3C's either.lol.:) I only had a double C then on a good day tho, heh.

A few of those guys were among the "youth bands" players too. I remember in from a Salinas trip then playing spanish guitar while Tim Prante and Scott Hunter did spanish screaming solos. Was too cool, heh. Maynards Primal Scream album with La Fiesta came out then. :)

I was among those too. What a sound with 57 trumpets. Rocky was great. Of course in the 77 band I was only playing 2nd so wasn't "allowed",heh.

I hope to help teach/build some chops out here in the Inland Empire FOR that end.
