*My best Fiddler on the Roof impression*:

"TRADITION!!!"

This is one band review I can proudly say I was a part of from 1993-1996 (including the first combined band review and field show tournament at Arcadia in 1996).

I hope it is a beautiful day, filled with great pageantry, and epic camaraderie.

"1993-1996"!! Piffle! Some of us were privileged to march in the West Arcadia Band Review even before the Arcadia High School Band Boosters was the organization in charge of the event. The West Arcadia Business Association was the driving force. (I think that was their name. I was but a youngster at that time.) And at that time the term Tom-Tom referred to the Arcadia High School Drill Team and not the two directors of the band. MY years were 1966-1969. Vore and Fore!, on the other hand, were a part of even earlier years at the West Arcadia Band Review. In those years the West Arcadia Band Review was very prestigious, but was often thought of as the last time to compete as the final rehearsal for the Long Beach All Western Band Review the following (Thanksgiving) weekend. I always felt that placing well at the West Arcadia Band Review was more difficult and more prestigious than placing at the All-Western. Arcadia has always been my favorite band review and I have freely stolen many of their procedures for the events with which I am now involved. Why re-invent the tried and true?

Is it true that they used woolly mammoth fur to cover the busbies back then?

Still one of the hardest events to place at, probably. I think one year out of my 4 years in band we got 4th place in drill team, taking home a single Arcadia trophy, and you'd have thought we won T of C or something.

As I Recall, back when I marched (72 & 73), there were only three places, as opposed to five at All-Western.

When recalling her band days, my wife considers winning Sweepstakes at Arcadia at an equal level with marching in the Rose Parade.

Which makes sense: there are a lot of bands each year in the Rose Parade (the majority of them, I would suggest) that wouldn't win 1st place or Sweepstakes at Arcadia.

My last two years at Magnolia ('81 and '82), we won sweepstakes at both Arcadia and All-Western. Winning All-Western in '82 trumps anything we did at Arcadia because we competed out of class and also had to beat Arcadia HS.

Marching the Rose Parade in '83 was just icing on the cake, but then again, my username isn't AllWestern82. :)

Chino HS won 4th Place Band in 1968.

Chino HS won 4th Place Band in 1968.
From what I understand, it went from five places to three places, then back to five places.

Well, it's tough to judge on a video tape...one that is 30 years old at that...but if Arcadia deserved to win, it would not have been, in my humble opinion, on music. Who did win music btw?

We had hoped to capture a woolly mammoth, especially since it was getting so COLD all the time, but there were none to be found so we had to settle on using the hide of the now extinct nauga. Wow, it just occurred to me that maybe we had something to do with their demise.

It's a good thing the 1982 recaps were on TOP of the stack!

It wasn't like Magnolia creamed the competition. It was relatively close.

Magnolia, playing The Conqueror, also won Sweepstakes in 1981 with a score of 96.30 along with the Music Award (482.5). Arcadia, playing The Stars & Stripes Forever, also scored 96.30. Their score breakdown is hidden in my files so all I have is the total. The were not in competition but were, instead, the honor band, having retired the Sweepstakes by winning it three years in a row. They retired the Long Beach All-Western Band Review Sweepstakes and they did it three times - 1968, 1975, 1981. Prior to 1968, the two bands that won 3 or more consecutive Sweepstakes were - Grossmont HS (1953-1956) and El Cajon Valley HS (1957-1959). Arcadia HS won the sweepstakes at the Long Beach All-Western Band Review a total of 11 times, more than the next frequent sweepstakes winners Grossmont HS (7), Loara HS (5), El Cajon Valley (4), and Magnolia (2).

Arcadia HS has marched in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade a total of 15 times (1956, 1963, 1966, 1975, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2012). Following far behind is Glendora HS (9 times, including 2014), Alhambra HS (7 times), and Mount Miguel HS (8 times).

Of course, all of this will be in THE BOOK.

I'm going to stop now. I think I just heard vore's head explode!
