BOA Phoenix

Post by banddork04 » Sun Oct 26, 2003 12:27 pm

It’s that time of year again, when California bands find out where they, and the whole state, rank at BOA Phoenix. Personally I think that the Cali bands will represent well with Upland, Etiwanda, Thousand Oaks, and Rancho Cucamonga. I know that some of the other bands out there are good (Coronado TX, Bel Air TX, Mountain Pointe AZ, Mead WA, and Bellevue East NE) but don’t know how good. Anybody got any predictions? Should be a great tournament!!! Go Southen California!!!

10. El Toro
9. J.M. Hanks
8. Bellevue East
7. Bell Air
6. Thousand Oaks
5. Americas
4. Mead
3. Upland
2. Coronodo
1. Etiwanda

pretty confident that all of my top seven will make finals but those last three spots could also be taken by Rancho Cucomonga, Andress, Onate, or Mountain Pointe. I wish there was more California bands like last year but it looks like the move to Arizona is going to bring in more Texas bands.

Etiwanda

Post by rickyric » Sun Oct 26, 2003 7:20 pm

If Etiwanda performs like they did at Claremont there will be a big gap from first and second. I hear they are improving from Claremont and that is just a WOW I can't wait to see that performance.

Don't sell the other bands short. Most of the bands there are WOW bands, and several are very capable of competing and/or beating Etiwanda.

i really dont predict a very large gap from first and second. i predict its going to be the opposite, i think itll be close. you seem so sure that etiwanda will be placing first. but i agree with phantom, "Don't sell the other bands short"

ill be rooting for upland and thousand oaks for first

from looking at the line-up, i am sure that itll be a good show. good luck to the bands attending

Does 1000 oaks Show do better at BOA?

Post by jacjar1 » Mon Oct 27, 2003 9:07 am

Saw TO show on Saturday, and its alot of fun to watch. Does their show score better at a BOA event vs a WBA or SCSBOA event?

Thanks Tyler for pointing that out its 1000 oaks. I have a sticky keyboard and it sometimes does not cooperate with me, Cant wait for the intuitive keyboards that will type what I am thinking..haha :D

My Predictions:

1. Etiwanda H.S., CA
2. Coronado H.S., TX
3. Americas H.S., TX
4. Upland H.S., CA
5. Thousand Oaks H.S., CA
6. Mead H.S., WA
7. Bel Air H.S., TX
8. El Toro H.S., CA
9. Rancho Cucamonga H.S., CA
10. J.M. Hanks H.S., TX

I think the top three will be close.

I really wish I could go to this event! If it were not held the same day as the BOA Super Regional, I would be there. Oh well. Hopefully they will announce who won the BOA Phoenix Regional at the BOA Super Regional. If any of you go to this event, let me know how it all goes down. Thanks!

As I understand it, the University of Arizona band is the guest band for the BOA show. I was in Tucson this past weekend and saw their field show, and I have to say it is one of the most exciting college band shows I have seen in 20 years. The whole unit is simply outstanding in every way--I was completely unprepared and grateful to have had the opportunity to see the performance twice. The auxiliary (including a 16-member baton corps better than most weapons lines) was insane for a college group. I won't say anything about the show, except that the music is original; and, that the music was composed and the show designed by the director, Jay Rees, conceptually inspired by a poem his wife wrote. Well, I will say the cymbal line did something that was a complete surprise and something I wish I had thought of at one time or another.

Those of you who will be there are in for a treat.

3. Upland
4. Americas
5. Bel air
6. Bellvue East
7. Mead
8. Thousand Oaks
9. Rancho Cucamonga
10. J.M. Hanks

Good predictions. I keep seeing that band in the predictions and I keep wondering how good they really are. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I think the California bands will do fine. Hey, if you look at it this way, the Texas bands are at a "disadvantage" too because of the 8-hour rule.

i don't know any specifics about the 8 hour rule, but any Texas bands that compete in UIL competitions are limited to only 8 hours of extracurricular practice a week. This year, two big Texas bands (I believe it is Westfield and Spring, but I'm not sure) are not competing in UIl so they will be able to practice as much as they want and be more competitive in BOA.

BOA Phoenix, The 8 Hour Rule.

Post by JLGORMAN » Thu Oct 30, 2003 2:20 pm

Let me explain the 8 Hour Rule for all TEXAS BANDS. It makes no difference wether you are competing in UIL Competitions or NOT. The stuff about the two schools not doing UIL so they could go more than Ten Hours of Practice is GARBAGE.

Fact: All Texas Schools are involved in UIL in all aspects of school life. The UIL 8 Hour rule states that from Aug 21st until the end of the school year, extracurricular practices of Bands are limited to 8 hours weekly. Now remember school time practices do not count against the 8 hour rule. You are also allowed one hour practice time prior to a contest. Travel time does not count against you. Thus if you have two hours a day of school time for practice you have ten hours plus the 8 hours. I can see reason why a High School Band needs a ten hour practice session, once school starts. This rule was put into place to protect students from greedy directors and boosters, who would try to make the Band the only thing a student could belong to. For your information, a Band found violating the 8 Hour rule would be suspended from all competitive activities, not just UIL. Not only that but the Director could be suspended from any competitive activities.

Unlike California, Texas schools have given the UIL authority in all areas of school activities, sports, Band, FFA, Debate, ETC. Because of this all schools compete on an even playing field.

A Band can choose not to compete in the UIL activities, however the rules of practice still apply. Ifyou need more than 8 hours of week practice, outside of school time, once the season has started, there is something wrong.

To read the UIL 8 Hour Rule, go to the UIL Music Pages on the World of Pageantry links and pull it up.
