This link will take you to the results page for the Cupertino Touarnament of Bands Field Show Results

http://www.chs.fuhsd.org/TOBResults2012

I'm not an expert in field show scoring.................but, does this seem a little strange?

Field Show Sweepstakes
Homestead 94.55

Music Sweepstakes
Saratoga 391.5

Marching Sweepstakes
Saratoga 281.5

Showmanship Sweepstakes
Saratoga 277.5

Saratoga wins the Music, Marching, and Showmanship Sweeptstakes, but doesn't win the Field Show Sweepstakes? Are there more judging captions that contribute to the Field Show winner besides those 3 areas?

From what I can tell, Saratoga had the highest score, but perhaps got hit with a ONE point penalty on their overall score, dropping them from 95.05 to 94.05 therefore awarding field sweepstakes to the next highest scored band (with no penalty) to Homestead, 94.55. I don't think it happens too often though.

It doesn't happen that often. But these kinds of penalties (in this capacity, when sweepstakes is on the line) do make the awards ceremony a little more interesting.

Couple of examples...

1997 Cupertino Field Show (from memory...WOP/Marching.com do not have these scores archived)
92.15 - Mtn. View
92.1 - Homestead

Homestead took M/M, GE, Music but lost Field Sweeps due to a 1pt penalty. So Mtn. View took sweeps (ironically, with Les Miserables).

2001 Grape Bowl Classic - Parade (this one IS in the WOP score archives)
Marching - 185.0 Lincoln
Showmanship - 282.0 Lincoln
Music - 476.5 Foothill (Pleasanton)
Parade - 92.80 Foothill (Pleasanton)

Lincoln's score? 89.25. Almost good enough for 3rd place in the division amidst their 5pt penalty for not playing through the zone.

Art Holton was a little upset by this "news"...
Once a drum major, always a drum major.

Correct - Saratoga had a 1 point time penalty for the field show.

I was there in person for both of those competitions. Your last sentence is an understatement. I can't remember who the head judge was (I'll have to dig up program and see), but Art was still giving him an earful on the track after parade awards had concluded, and the head judge was having none of it. I don't think it was Rowland Nielsen... maybe Ron Jones? Been too long.

Oh yeah: the penalty was valid. I made a note of Lincoln's performance time in the program while watching the parade. I think they still had 3-4 ranks in the competition zone when the music ceased.
