124th Tournament of Roses Parade Bands (2013)
So with the 2012 Rose Parade in the record books, it's time to look forward to next year! Here are the bands that have been invited to the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade:
Bands of America Honor Band (Indianapolis, IN)
Davis High School (Kaysville, UT)
Jackson Memorial High School (Jackson, NJ)
Lafayette High School (Lafayette, KY)
Lassiter High School (Marietta, GA)
Lincoln High School (Sioux Falls, SD)
Los Angeles Unified School District Honor Band (Los Angeles, CA)
MOC-Floyd Valley Senior High School (Orange City, IA)
Morgantown High School (Morgantown, WV)
Salvation Army Band (Long Beach, CA)
Santiago High School (Corona, CA) -- 2012 LA County Fair Champions
Seminole High School (Seminole, FL)
Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band (Pasadena, CA)
United States Marine Corps West Coast Composite Band (San Diego, CA)
Valley Christian High School / Beijing No. 57 High School (San Jose, CA / Beijing, China)
Pac-12 Representative
Big 10 Representative
So that adds up to 17, which means a few more bands are probably TBA, most likely the international bands. But it looks like next year's parade and bandfest is shaping up to be another musical feast, with several BOA powerhouses Lassiter H.S. (1998, 2002 Grand National Champions), Lafayette H.S. (2004 GN Finalists, perennial semi-finalist), and not to mention the BOA Honor Band itself!

Lots of good bands next year. Sioux Falls Lincoln is one of the top bands in the upper midwest (usually on equal footing in local competitions with Rosemount HS, MN, who is a perennial finalist at BOA St. Louis). MOC-Floyd Valley is a fantastic small school band from NW Iowa. This past fall they marched 148 kids out of a school of only 426! Seminole, FL and Davis, UT are also multiple-time finalists at BOA Regionals.

It will be a good view. NOW is the time for everyone to contact the stations and networks that broadcast the parade and ask them to not talk over the band music and to show the bands, not put a graphic over them.

This has been tried for the past 30+ years. The university marching band directors worked on a united national level for a long time so their halftime performances would be shown... they had no success.DirectorDrummerJudge wrote:It will be a good view. Also, they apparently believe Joe Average Fan would rather listen to the "experts" analyze the first half and watch highlights of other games. I'm afraid they're probably right.

After this year's event, perhaps the TofR will rethink the number of horse units in favor of bands.
Fewer horses would also reduce the probability of "slip and fall" accidents amongst band members and boy/girl scout banner carriers (the TofR only picks up the road apples in the camera area).

Won't happen if you think Bob "Boob" Eubanks is right. He is all "pro horse" and truly DESPISES floats and bands. After having decorated floats and listened to this *** tell the ToR people that he feels "all of this is BS .. the glue and flowers, the stupid marching and crappy music played by high school students who don't know which end of their instrument is "up", and anything not riding on a horse ... the whole reason we are here is because of the animals ... screw the rest of it." (This is a true story as I watched this jerk walk the float barns for over 10 years). Thank goodness the ToR sees otherwise ... the heck with "Boob" and I hope he quits announcing.fidave wrote:After this year's event, perhaps the TofR will rethink the number of horse units in favor of bands.

BTW .. Valley View HS (Moreno Valley) went head to head against Valley Christian for years and I'm glad VC will be marching in the Rose Parade ... they've earned it (and my kudos and respect to them!).
Re: 124th Tournament of Roses Parade Bands (2013)
I found it unusual that no Band from TX was on this years list. Looking further into it, I have heard that the TofR is no longer a draw for Marching Bands from TX. Among comments heard as to why no one applies are the following:
1. The Application process is demeaning. Most of our Bands do not do Parade competitons, so it is hard to get good DVDS of Parade Marching. Further the application demands are long and drawn out, and not Band friendly.
2. The Cost, to a person, everyone complains about how expensive CA is to go there. It costs almost twice as much to take a Band to CA to do the same thing they can participate in at Disney World in FL. Plus the whole Band can stay in Hotels at Disney world on property and see a much bigger theme park. Other comments pertained to the terrible traffic in the LA area. Granted Bands from El Paso will probably still come to CA(it is as close to LA from El Paso as it is to Houston).
3. We are jaded. When you can go to London or Rome for the same price as Pasadena, or perform in Washington DC and New York, let alone BoA Super Regionals in Atlanta and ST. Louis, many directors are choosing these locations. I wish this was not the case, but this is what seems to be driving our school Bands lack of interest in the TofR.

Is Valley Christian High School partnering with the Beijing School to form one band?

Yes. Valley Christian's band is traveling to China in April to meet up with the Beijing band and begin rehearsals. Then the Chinese band will be coming over to the states in late December for final rehearsals and the Rose Parade next January.tooweird wrote:Is Valley Christian High School partnering with the Beijing School to form one band?
