Help with march ? ?

Post by Fore! » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:47 pm

I am totally frustrated because I can't recall the march that was based on a Franz Liszt piano piece. Do you know which one I'm talking about? After the opening theme it is repeated exactly but in another key.

Help!

Do you mean the Rakoczy March of which the main thematic material was used by Liszt (Hungarian Rhapsody) and Berlioz (Damnation of Faust)?

Well, I'm not sure - the actual question / inquiry came from Don Marino, former director at Palos Verdes HS. He lives out here in Temecula an directs a youth orchestra. He asked me if I knew and I holds him I'd do a bit of research. I guess his band played the march back "in the day" and he was contacted by a couple of former students asking the question. I'll pass along your info.

Thank You John.

Has to be the Rakoczy March. I can't think of anything else it could be.

The Rakoczy melody was composed back in the 1700s by some now-anonymous composer. Liszt, Berlioz, and many other composers have incorporated it into their works in some form or another.

March Grandioso is based on Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #14 (sometimes also called #1).

So I know Don Marino, and we matched to March Grandioso at PVHS in 1984. So that is it!
