This is my attempt to compare and adjust scores from competition to competition to create an overall ranking of the competitive environment.

BANDS WILL NOT BE RANKED UNTIL THEY HAVE COMPETED

The sports polls for colleges do a Top 25, so that's what I will do, too.

There will be a few bands at the St. George Regional on 11/5, but that's it. None going to Grand Nationals.

There are so many active BOA bands (almost 700 different schools have attended BOA competitions in the past four years) that I may do a Top 50 later in the season.

I actually think in any given year there are 5-10 CA bands that would stand at least an outside chance at Finals. And this year, with no L.D. Bell and no Plymouth-Canton, we might see some new faces in Finals.

Dang....your opinion is cool and all, but pretty harsh delivery with the tone of your post.

Maybe its cuz kids in CA have the opportunity to enjoy good weather in the month of November.......that enjoyment of good weather probably gets a few of these kids to daydream a bit during rehearsals.

But its all good....you can have it I guess.....CA percussion lines will still take care of business in April at WGI :nenr: ...

just having some fun, nobody get to offended........but since I'm at it......how many DCI championships do CA corps have? and hasn't BDB just won 3 in a row too :bleah:

I guess we gotta throw you a bone somewhere :yeah:

I am not going to get into who and how many would/could get into finals, but I will state that there is a significant difference in the show design of BOA finalists from the California standard. Also, some of our California bands can play as well, and some can move as well, but it is rare to do both.

I think the most shocking difference is the support those bands get from school, district and community. You would be amazed at what it is like back east (and in Texas).

I have heard the same thing from my mother in law in New Jersey....and Moorestown doesn't even march, to my knowledge.

This. In Indiana and Texas especially, but to a lesser extent in Oklahoma, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio, too. Oklahoma and Kentucky aren't nearly as populated as California or Texas, yet I still count 117 Oklahoma bands and 164 Kentucky bands that have attended their respective state championships in the past four years. In Texas and Indiana, schools with 300 kids will send out marching bands of 125.

In reality, when I look across the scholastic music scenes in every area of the country, it's amazing that the California bands do SO MUCH with SO LITTLE. The level of support found in other states is incomparable.

Oh, and this stretches WAY beyond BOA and marching band competitions. Indeed, Indiana's best music program might belong to a school whose marching band doesn't compete anywhere.

North Central H.S. Orchestra, Indianapolis, IN
"Finale to Symphony No. 4" by Tchaikovsky

I wish this could be stapled on the foreheads of all school administrators, school board members, and state lawmakers including the governor.
