So that no one is taken aback by the final results, let me share some inside background.

1) Qualified band adjudicators (past and present SCSBOA) will assign scores to the bands through the preliminary competitions and determine the top three bands.

2) The top three bands perform in finals for the Los Angeles County Fair personnel who schedule the entertainment groups for the Fair and Tournament of Roses Music Committee members. They are not experienced marching band adjudicators. It is THEY who will determine the bronze, silver, and gold award winners. The gold award winner is invited to perform in the 2013 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Music Committee has traditionally attended a number of band reviews each year (including Chino and Arcadia) for the sole purpose of selecting bands for invitation to the Rose Parade. Since contracting with the Los Angeles County Fair, Tournament of Roses Officials and LA County Fair Officials have advised band directors that the ONLY way a band will be invited to the Rose Parade is to be selected at the LA County Fair. So then, why do they attend the other band reviews? I have submitted that question to the Chairman of the Music Committee of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. I will share the answer when I receive it.

Several years ago I used to judge this event with Gary Iida and Michele Allen. We tried very hard to "educate" (always in friendly way) the folks at the Fair, both the Fair staff and the Rose Parade Committee members, on how band judging should be done. We had meetings with Fair personell before the parades started and at the end of the event to discuss ways to improve the event and the ajudication process. I used to have long conversations with the Rose Parade representatives before every night of the parades. But the problem is that every few years the fair personell are completely rotated out and new folks are brought in and to a lesser extent the same happens with the Rose Parade people. Unfortunately the Fair folks do not always relay past experiences to the new folks that take over, which means they basically start over from scratch. For the Rose Parade Committee members, the Fair is basically their first band evaluation experience of the season, so they are not always up to speed yet. If the judges that are hired for the event don't take the initiative and try "teach" the Fair personell and Rose Parade folks how it is supposed to be done, then they will just wander down the path without much guidence. Because it seems that the way the winner is chosen has changed from when I was involved.

Does anyone know if Luis is taking videos of each of the groups? Much like he did last year. That was extremely helpful and a good teaching tool to have something like that early in the season.

Yes sir :)

I just created this playlist on my youtube channel. I'll update this list throughout this competition. For those of you interested, you can check back for newly added bands.

Good luck to all groups.

Honestly from seeing the bands that just performed the last couple of days I seen that Chino HS didn't do that of a good. I feel like the last 3 bands will be Riverside King HS, Kaiser HS, Diamond Bar HS or Diamond Ranch HS.
Right now it's anyone game.

Still good luck to all the bands.

Looks like there are a few typos in that list, John. Should be "Mercer Island" from Washington and "Siloam Springs" from Arkansas.
