Actually the Tournament of Roses is really only interested in out of state bands that are big. The Tournament of Roses also knows that if only CA Bands are in the Parade, it will have eventually the same viewing audience that the Hollywood Santa Claus Lane parade draws. This year the Bands from American Fork,Siloam Springs, AR and Lubbock, TX are all large Bands. All of them are bigger than what Glendora was last year. More people bring more parents and more parents spend more money at Disney, Universal, ETC. Let us face it, another Southern CA Band will not add any large amount of funds to the economy, or the TV Ratings. I agree in most cases the CA Bands are superior to the rest of the Bands in the event. However being a great marching band is not the main issue. Given a choice of Allen or Glendora for the parade, who do you think they would pick. 615 beats 120 every day.

JLGORMAN nailed it on the head. If we all can agree to that, then why have the LA County fair be a "competition"??? It is laughable to call it that. The mere thought of the LA Fair being a competition for the right to go to the Rose Parade is false advertising. The Music Selection committee of the Rose Parade needs to just be honest with themselves and acknowledge the fact that they do what JLGORMAN said, take the large bands. We would all be fine with it if they did and not just sit back and hide behind the "Competition" moniker.

Well......if you know the rules going into the competition and you're a band director who believes there's problems in the selection process then why go? Isn't better not to support the event rather than keep it going if you don't like the way they do things?
