Prompted by a suggestion in another thread, I decided to set out and rank Californian field bands based on this past season's results. If you're just looking for the final numbers, scroll down. But if you're curious about the process, I will try to explain my approach.

I started off with three main objectives:

Objective 1: Inclusiveness
Bands and scores from WBA, BOA, NCBA, SCSBOA, MBOS, and SCJA were all included. This lead to the premise of the rankings: if every band attended one giant competition using each of the circuits' judging systems, what would their overall average score be?

Objective 2: Equality
We could (and have) gotten into arguments on here about this circuit being better than that circuit, crummy judges, et al., but it has no place in a numerical analysis. All six scoring "circuits" were given equal value into the final formula.

Objective 3: Unbiasedness (?!)
Or whatever you want to call it. Once the raw data was loaded, all school names were hidden from me until the final formulas were completed. There was no "favoring" of Band X or Y just because they were traditionally a major player or dominated their circuit.

With this in mind, I loaded my circuit rankings (based on circuit championship scores, last score of the season, and/or adjusted final score if band's season ended prior to the third Saturday in November) into the spreadsheet. The main two obstacles I had to negotiate were how to compare bands that only compete in one circuit, and how to accommodate the judging differences between the circuits. For example, how would James Logan fare against Arcadia in an SCSBOA competition? And how to resolve the conflict of Band A beating Band B by five points in one circuit, only to lose by five in another?

To accomplish this, I did a statistical analysis of the scoring variances of every band that competed in multiple circuits in 2010 to determine an "exchange rate" when adjusting from circuit to circuit (it couldn't be a flat-rate, either, since some circuits tend to bunch scores at the top while others spread them out across 50-60 points). I did this for all six circuits, and then cross-referenced all of them against one another. Needless to say, without Excel doing the heavy lifting for me, these rankings never would have been completed.

Fortunately, there is enough "cross-pollination" between the field shows in California to provide a sample size sufficient for the statistics. The very separated nature of the parade competitions in the state will preclude me from doing the same rankings for parade bands. Sorry.

Lastly, while a band dominating one judging system is impressive, a band that wins in three or four judging systems is even more impressive. A small bonus modifier was given to bands that competed in more than one circuit.

Some results are expected, some are surprising. Without further ado, here are the rankings...

How cool! You accepted my challenge... and wow.. Amazing work! It's just mind-boggling how you manage to do this.

Some of the results were shocking, especially for the school I attend (John A. Rowland). We're actually in the top 50! That was a pleasant surprise :yeah:

Thanks for doing this  It was great to see how everyone ranked up.

Gosh, you are the man!! Well, there could be a "rookie of the year" or "COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR." Mr. Hostrauser, I will be a bit of a goober  and give the nod of "COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR" = my students at Dublin!! For the first time since 1999 and this being our third year together... My students' scores were very respectable ending with a 90 at their fourth EVER field show at Foothill Band Review.

Don't want to "hi-jack" your post (which is I hope meant more to be 'entertaining/interesting'). I love it!! It's cool. Again, thanks and thanks for letting me show some love for my students doing something that has NOT been done at our school since 1999. I hope we will be able to continue doing field shows.

4-5 hours. Luckily I already have "circuit" spreadsheets for the WBA, BOA, SCSBOA, NCBA, and MBOS. All I really had to do was accumulate data from the SCJA, compile and write formulas. Like I said, without Excel this would have taken weeks.

BAsed on this rankings system, I feel better about my totally random guess in the other thread about top 10 bands. My only "mistake" was placing Upland in the top 10 while leaving out CLovis West. Could be my SoCal bias and having never sen Clovis West. My order was not the same as this but I'm glad I chose the key players.

Fun...

Just to keep the "KUM-BA-YAH" feelings going.

I do appreciate Mr. Stone, Mr. Barrera, Mr. Grantham, Mr. Butterfield and MANY OTHERS for giving me the information I needed to share with boosters and admin about re-building a field show program!! I would encourage others to help others and encourage the "new" others to keep it simple and return to the basics of our field show heritage.

Those who have taken the ART of Field Show to the next level...let them enjoy it, too. Us "newbies" ... we are the "roots" of the ART which can blossom into beautiful programs like those "TOP 10" bands/guards have become.
